The Idea
In the nineteenth century nearly every American town kept a lyceum: a hall where anyone with mastery could lecture, debate, and teach their neighbors. Douglass spoke in them. Emerson toured them. Twain filled them. Then broadcast media made audiences passive, and the halls went quiet.
